I make these Sugar and Spice cookies every year. They are so simple, they can be made in one bowl, but I prefer to mix the moist ingredients first.
¾ cup softened shortening
1 cup granulated sugar
2 cups + 2 tablespoons flour
1 egg
1 tsp ginger
1 tsp cloves
1 tsp cinnamon
¾ tsp salt
1 tsp baking soda
¼ molasses
Extra granulated sugar
Preheat your oven to 350◦ F
Cream the shortening and the sugar in a large bowl. Stir in the egg and the molasses.
In another bowl stir together the flour, baking soda and spices. Gradually add to the moist ingredients. You can use a fork or an electric mixer.
Form the dough into small balls – around 1 actual teaspoonful. Roll the balls of dough into granulated sugar. Place on a lightly greased cookie sheet or Silpat.
Bake for 11 minutes for chewy cookies, 13 minutes for crispy. Makes about 40 cookies if you don’t sample the dough!!

Thank you so much, Hazel. On my shivery winter walk to the market this aft. I've got to pick up molasses but then I can make these. I like the big sites for recipes but it's kind of remote, you know? I mean, who to blame when it all goes wrong:) News & perhaps a few pix over the weekend. Julie is particularly interested in sugar & spice cookies being made as she thinks the title refers to her.xo
I forgot to say that I loved seeing the red & green background today. Very cheerful & most welcome!
As soon as I get some shortening, I'm making these! They sound really easy and scrummy too!
