January, month of empty pockets!

"The shortest day has passed, and whatever nastiness of weather we may look forward to in January and February,
at least we notice that the days are getting longer. Minute by minute they lengthen out. It takes some weeks before
we become aware of the change. It is imperceptible even as the growth of a child, as you watch it day by day,
until the moment comes when with a start of delighted surprise we realize that we can stay out of doors in a
twilight lasting for another quarter of a precious hour."
- Vita Sackville-West

The above is Painting #2 for 2010. It's a complete rip-off of Canadian artist William Goodridge Roberts (more about him later). I needed some practice.

Does anyone know who I'm quoting in my title (without Googling)? She's one of my favourite writers and I was recently disappointed by a movie adaptation of one of her classic stories.

It must be so satisfying to be able to produce such a painting!

Oui. Colette.

Lovely painting...I wish I could paint (well).

I did not google the answer so now you need to elaborate. I do like the title and I love this painting. I was looking for the credit and here it is you! What talent you have.

Great title, but I've no idea who wrote it--you must tell!
Lovely painting. You are a talented and clever pup!

Okay, so it may be a "rip-off", as you say, but it's a bloody good one! (Those blue-rimmed bowls are always so clean looking.)

I know Vita, but I'm ashamed to say the quote escapes me. Of course with the film reference (and your tying my hands) I shall definitely go mad until I work it out.

How recent was the film? (or was it just that you viewed it recently?)

Hi Kat, the quote's from Colette. The movie's Gigi. Very stilted dialogue, like George Lucas instead of Stephen Frears directed it.

Say it isn't so, CP! I love, "Gigi"! Well, I love the music anyway. You may be right about the dialogue, but still—Louis, Hermione, Maurice and of course Leslie! My favourite scene is the "Say a Prayer" when she's holding the cat, of course.
Gaston will always be a favourite character despite his Lucasian lingo.

Sorry, Kat, I misspoke. It was "Cherie". What's wrong with me. It was really bad.
