Flapper Fashion Friday

The Sartorialist was at last weekend's Jazz Age Lawn Party on Governor's Island, N.Y. He snapped many pictures of the event and has generously allowed me to use two.

This event utterly beguiles me. The 1920's theme seems so esoteric, but I believe the event is extremely popular. Revelers put a lot of earnest thought into assembling the right Gatsby-Era get-up and many of them know how to dance to the old songs. The setting looks idyllic and the remoteness of Governor's Island from the bustle of Manhattan must make the party seem almost completely removed from the present day. One day I hope to attend.

I think this would be a great thing to do on a honeymoon. But what do I know? Remember what Groucho said about marriage?

Please check out the other photos on The Sartorialist and take a gander at my post of May 31, 2009 in which I featured Michael Arenella and his Dreamland Orchestra. He's really worth a listen.

Remember what Groucho said about marriage? No - but do tell. As for the Jazz Age Lawn Party - it looks wonderful. I'm especially charmed by the flat shoes on the dancers. Is that true to the period? If so, those flappers were more sensible than their daughters.

I have never been to either Manhattan or Governor's Island so to me both seem far removed (I live near Sydney).

In both of these images I can almost hear the music!

So, my dear. Going to leave me to write about Zelda & so on, I see. Two of my favorite subjects: Gatsby & Groucho. (I think broadly, if not deeply.)

As for shoes. I just peered at a pix of my flapper grandmother & a friend that I planned to use in a few weeks. I may be forced to address this important matter sooner, because whether she means to or not, I'm feeling goaded (in the nicest possible way) by La Pup.

The shoes of which I speak are many-strapped affairs, & are low-heeled though not flat. They're very cool. All I shall say at moment.

But I've asked H-Pup to meet me in NYC next year if we can get our respective acts together. I may make this a public challenge (by signing into blogger) rather than simply using my name. Hmmm.

OK. Yeah, you're on sister.

there should be more theme based parties. It's nice to step outside of one's persona and take on a new one....

I keep seeing pictures of this event on blogs and I'm so jealous of everyone who was able to attend. I wish I could visit NY at this time of year just to go to go!

I've never looked at The Sartorialist's blog, but these pictures ARE utterly beguiling.

Something about the dropped waist dresses and the shingled hair . . . so glamorous in a summery way.

I think it would be a charming way to spend part of one's honeymoon. Of course you'd need to find someone who can (or is willing to) dance.
