She captures that sedate (repressed) expression in her female subjects (mirroring her own subjugation, perhaps?)

Margaret, Edouard had been married to Suzanne Leenhof since 1863. I wonder if Manet and Berthe were ever lovers since she did not seem to succumb to the syphilis that plagued Manet to the end.
