What, Me Worry?

"WHAT is going on down there?" she says, hands on her hips.

Congratulations on the passing of the Health Reform Bill. But the Republican nay-sayers are running around creating copy for MAD Magazine. I can see it now -  a double-page "Mad Looks At Republicans". Sarah with her bum in the air, drawing cross-hairs on 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Bewigged tea-partiers dumping ballot boxes into the sea. Glenn Beck with a big fat tear drop.

We've had Medicare in Canada since the 60s. It's all about giving a little so we can all be treated fairly. It may sound socialist. It is! But we don't have horns coming out of our heads; we don't goosestep around like Soviet soldiers, we don't have death panels and we don't have to bargain over which severed digit to save.

Being from Norway and a sosialistisk country, where the state takes the medical bill.Where the word sosialist is a positive word I am so confused.I thought this was a little tiny step in the right direction.
But is it that the USA ,the government is to defend and protect it's citizens. Is this bill a step over ?Is it thought the state is now takeing control? Are they loosing their freedom?

Thanks, Pup. I needed a bit of a laugh. It is weird down here, & I also mean in DC. We're scared to death of these crazies coming to the city & committing worse than their violent words.

To Alette. We're not losing any freedoms. We're gaining them. For instance, my nephews & niece who need care but are out of work will be able to be carried on their parents insurance again until 26.

I have a friend who will, in 6 months, be able to have her first real checkup for several serious chronic ailments--in 10 years she has not been able to go to the doctor regularly. There are so many stories. People in the States go into bankruptcy & lose homes & life savings (& lose insurance quite often) if they have an illness or an accident. It is so common.

Many people in my country are quite ignorant about what their actual rights are. When they receive care or their children do, they will be glad. Many of their parents were against Medicare & Social Security. Now if it were to be taken away, they would riot.

I won't go on any longer. It's a tragedy that people are at each other's throats. On a lesser note, we are the laughingstock of the developed world. Rightly so.

Cheers. And a lot of us would like to know if you Canadians will take some of us in. We'll bring our own pensions, savings, & so on. We won't be a burden. I need a backdoor plan, just in case. I'm not kidding.

ciao

Ha, well said. There is a big fear mongering machine hard at work. It runs on ignorance and special interest money.

I am thrilled that we in the United States have finally passed a bill to begin reforming our healthcare system. I have known many people whose health and finances have been severely impacted if not ruined under our heartless old system.

I only wish there were some way of calming the dialogue on this political issue and on many others. The doublespeak and bullying techniques used by Fox News and other screaming media outlets prevent any true exploration of issues and obscure facts. Remember under our last administration when the word "liberal" was considered an insult? Gee, it is a mad world indeed when a word the means "generous and broad-minded" is made out to be a slur. Now the right wing in the United States is doing its best to equate "socialism" and "socialized" with the National Socialist party of Germany in the 1930s and 40s. Consequently there are the disgusting and ridiculous images of Obama with Hitler's mustache. Shame on the people that employ this trick knowing the lie they are telling, and shame on my countrymen who are ignorant enough to fall for this ridiculous story.

As an Australian, so pleased about the Health Bill in USA.
It seems extraordinary that with our standard of living health and education for all are not basic requirements if we call ouselves 1st world countries...I sometimes feel very teary about humanities unkindness.
Sorry to be grim!

To anonymous people...interesting that you won't say who you are. I'm a poet & a writer who does not stick to "art" & ..wow, you connect that with "superficial." Hmmm. I like it when Hazel combines things. It's all connected. Artists are on the front line--or ought to be.

cheers

Susan

Same thought as Susan. Real artists were certainly taken seriously enough by the NSDAP in 1930's Germany. Art museums were ravished, cabarets were shut, the film industry was censored ... shall I go on, anonymous one?

Hazel, thanks for the acknowledgement that we're doing something good down here. It's a tiny step forward, but forward it is!

I agree Hazel. Our NHS may be struggling and imperfect but we're so very fortunate to have it

France has a great helathcare system since the 30ties. It's only fair that everyone has access to helath and eductaion.

Yes, Canada's health system has long waits but its worth it. Someone said it, I think on Therese's FB, that we pay tax and expect the fire department to come, we expect the police to come. Hopefully you'll pay a little tax off your payroll and you can expect healthcare too.

For the past 12 years I've had no health insurance....hoping to god I didn't break an arm, contract a deadly disease, choke on a fig.......I would have had to die from it as I had no money to compensate.
The Republicans could care less about anyone other than themselves and how much money they can rake in. It's disgusting. At least the two evildoers are out of office (Bush and Cheney) and this country can rebuild from their destructive deeds and move on. Finally I feel relieved and wishing Obama the best!
