Nope, don't agree, its simplifying a really complex issue, all need to work together; Joe individual (taking more personal responsibility), insurance cos (private industry), and the federal govt.
The health industry as it stands does not need to be turned on its head, giving govt power over the individual way into the future (pay up!!! you have NO CHOICE), why not federal inter-state control over insurance cos? Thats what our consitution states the federal govt can have control over. Interstate commerce, not over the individual.

Pup--I look forward to being able to see video on Friday night! I shall take my leave before I leave a sarcastic message re: states & the Constitution.

Hello Beth,

In Canada we have a national health insurance program designed to ensure that all residents have reasonable access to medically necessary hospital and medical services, on a prepaid basis.

Prepaid means a small percentage is deducted from your paycheque.

For instance people with taxable income of more than $20,000 contribute, paying a premium from $60 a year to up to $900 a year for people earning over $200,00.

People making less than $20,000 don't pay at all. But everybody needs to have a health card and a file.

We have a national program that is composed of 13 interlocking provincial and territorial health insurance plans.

While the Canadian Plan has its pitfalls, long waiting times and doctor shortages, universal health care promotes the values of equity and solidarity.

Prescriptions and dental are not covered. A lot of work places have additional health care plans for things like prescription and dental and private rooms and that comes out of employees paycheques too. No one has to go broke because they're ill. Assorted medical expenses not covered, prescriptions, eye exams can be submitted for rebate at income tax time.

There are times just to be overjoyed I'm Canadian.

Like when I'm ill.

Or when I see what's going on down in the States.

hi to the middle pup,

Americans are having a hard time trusting that this govt, and its propensity to abuse and waste, can effectively run a huge health care system (besides the question of the legality of the fed govt re: this sort of power.) A new gallup poll Sept 15 asked "Of every tax dollar that goes to Washington DC how many cents of each dollar would you say is wasted?" Gallup found that the mean response was 50 cents. With Uncle Sam spending just shy of $4 trillion this year, that means the public believes that $2 trillion is wasted.

More discussion is needed, and this is going on, very clearly. There is a powerful voter backlash against the Bush-Obama agenda of bailouts, stimulus plans and trillioin dollar-plus deficits, and I'm afraid I'm part of it!

There is need for reform; tort, interstate insurance co competition, all kinds of stuff. This plan doesn't do it for me, and to wag the finger at one (admittedly big part of the prob) is not helpful (video) but somewhat maddening to those of us who put a lot of thought into the issue.

I've been ill, no problem here!
