Regency Fashion Friday

In keeping with a string of fashion-themed Friday posts I present a series of photos of Hugh Laurie dressed in the Regency costume of Mr. Palmer from the 1995 adaptation of Sense and Sensibility. The top picture reminds me strongly of a Reynolds or a Gainsborough or a portrait by Sir Thomas Lawrence.

Thomas Lawrence: Henry Bougham, 1825

Here's a montage of clips from the film Sense and Sensibility, demonstrating Mr. Laurie sharpening his saturnine wit for his outing as Dr. House.

Thank you for this delightful Friday post. The first, & one of few, VHS tapes I purchased. Also bought the Emma Thompson's book on making of...huge crushes on AR & HL. And they are just as they should be in character compared with book. In my mind, though I've seen other good productions, nothing beats Ang Lee & Emma's. And they do look utterly elegant & agreed re: painting.

Was wishing I could see the YouTube clip & then realized, oh, I have the tape:) xo

Even from the tiny thumbnail on my dashboard, I recognized this as Hugh Laurie. He was ideal for this role and cut quite a DASH in his Edwardian attire.
I have to say though, I like him best as Bertie Wooster, pllunking away at his piano in his Art Deco apartment with Stephen Fry as the inimitable Jeeves (another favourite).

I have a complaint. All that Hugh Laurie (and yes, he was definitely practicing for his House role!) but only one tiny glimpse of a silent Alan Rickman. Tsk. I think I have to go rent this movie.

Must go immediately to find/rent/borrow/steal S&S...how I adore Mr. Laurie (also Alan Rickman, also Emma Thompson)...thank you for solving one weekend dilemma & enjoy your own (weekend, that is, no dilemmas).

he fit that role well...while quite dapper, glad i don't have to dress in all that each day.

I loved Sense and Sensibility - funny to see Hugh Laurie like that as I am so used to him in House, xv.

I forgot that he was in this role! It is nice to see the stills, because when I am watching films I don't really notice the clothing so much. Well, not the men's clothing, anyway.

By the way, when I went to Jane Austen's house last week I MARVELLED at the skimpiness of the Regency day dresses. They must have been darn cold.

I've watched this movie so many times. The palette of the sets is gorgeous. I'm not sure if we've talked about this before, Hazel. Was it you who loved listening to the soundtrack as I do?
Have a great weekend,
Catherine

one of my favourite films, and Hugh Laurie is just great in it, very funny.

regency fashion doesn't seem quite as much a pain to wear as some other eras. Tho I don't have the bust for it...
