Where do you find these marriage banns of famous people? Are they on one of your genealogy websites? They're fun.

However, I don't know enough about Colette's private life to know why Willy was odious. Now I'm curious.

Hi Sallymandy,

Yes I've been finding them on Ancestry.com

The myth of the odious Willy in a nutshell: He was about 15 years older than Colette when he married her. He looked much older and debauched. In Paris he locked her in a room and forced her to write titillating stories about school girls, which he put his name to. She never saw any royalties for years.

But never fear she overcame it and went on to live her own debauched life.

Polly - I love Colette too. Maybe I'll write a mini bio of her soon.

Oh, he was odious. Thanks for filling me in.

You asked a question the other day in a comment. Yes, I think it's worth it.

Really interesting comments and replies on your Colette post. I know about this much: she wrote Gigi. Certainly I've heard of her but as an English Lit major rather than a French or World Lit major, I stuck to the Brits and Americans and have kinda missed out on Flaubert, Dumas, Colette and so many more. sigh.

Your paintings are terrific!

He has a distinctly calculating look, but she does look able to take him on.
