What Water Gave Me

Willow's poem "Regeneration" reminded me of Frida Kahlo's “Water Gave Me” 1938. It's really worth checking out.

I'm not participating In TT this week. Maybe next.

I love the reflected painted toe-nails. I'm not too familiar with Kahlo's work and I really ought to see that film with Salma Hayek. This picture reminds me also of those miniatures I was talking about.

Willow's poem was great, wasn't it?

I've never seen this work of Kahlo's, but then I haven't seen very much of it. I'll investigate further. Seems like a good enough TT addition to me!

Thanks for this H-Pup.

I see Frida every day, looking over me while I make espresso in the a.m. Via a huge blown-up print by Lola Alvarez Bravo. The DC-located National Museum of Women in the Arts owns it & they gave me a larger one than they sold in their shop.

I will get over to the poem...but wanted to say to Kat that, with all due respect to Salma, if anyone is interested, do read Hayden Herrera's excellent biography of Frida Kahlo, too. Then it's great to see Salma bring her to life...

Both Salma & Molina were good in their parts, etc. but it just cannot do justice to such a complicated life & culture in Mexico City (& elsewhere). Have been thinking a lot about them bec. everytime I turn on radio, there is Mexico City in the news.

I bought the large-format paperback by Herrera in 1990 when re-released (1983 pub date). It was hugely influential...& I was not quite aware of that when I bought it. I just knew I wanted to read it, right then. I remember it was a Friday & I did not take spending that much money lightly. In this case, judging a book by its cover was a good thing.

This post & subsequent comments inspired me to take the book off the shelf & I think I'll reread some chapters.

Thanks again...

To say I love that painting and Frida Khalo that's another with an interesting life.
Good choice.

I was fortunate enough to see this painting in person in Philadelphia last May. Kahlo's paintings are absolutely amazing in reality. The colors are fibrant and the detail magnificent! I've never seen an exhibit that touched me on so many levels.

I contemplated using this painting for my poem post, but decided Frida had waaaay more going on in her tub than I did!
