Colin the Firth

Long live King Colin the Firth.

The  first time I saw Colin Firth was in 1986 on Masterpiece Theater in a mini-series called Lost Empires. He was playing a young man in the Great War era who had joined his uncle's magic act. "The Empire" was the name of the chain of music halls they visited in various towns around England. He was sad and serious but compelling nonetheless.
Then there was A Month in the Country, again sad and serious but caught my attention in an otherwise forgetful film.

And then Valmont, the Dangerous Liaison's story, where Colin Firth rocked the puffy shirt (and Meg Tilly's world) before Mr. Darcy.

Yann Tiersen

Snore.

Yann Tiersen's the guy responsible for the Amelie soundtrack and he was at the Phoenix, a Toronto concert hall. I guess I'm living in a fantasy world but I set out tonight expecting joyful, uplifting music. But I got a pile of boring crap. Tiersen played a theme from Amelie during the encore at double speed for about 12 seconds. I thought that was an insolent way to treat the material that made his name.

I was so looking forward to it but it almost wrecked my memories of the movie.  He may be tired of constantly reprising the pieces from the film but that's what I wanted.

Special Report: Snow in Toronto

It snowed. In Toronto. Not the snopocalypse that was predicted; there was less than 2 inches on the path this morning. The schools are closed. When I was a girl, (she said waving her cane), we had to walk to school through a foot and a half of the white stuff...even during exams.

According to the latest radar Toronto's in for another pile of snow later this afternoon. Until then, please have a laugh at this Rick Mercer report.
