Tamara de Lempicka

On this day, May 16, 1898, painter Tamara de Lempicka was born as Maria Górska in Warsaw. She was the first woman artist to be a glamour star and I think Lady Gaga channels her a little bit. Lempicka painted in the art deco style; creating some of the era's most recognizable graphic images. She died in Mexico in 1980.

When I first started looking at Tamara de Lempicka's work, I thought I wouldn't love it - too uber cool, too posterish, too focused on fashion.

But she had something special, didn't she? Her models had something very seductive; her images may have reflected, on the canvas, the dramatic events she lived in her own life.

I offer Art Deco tours and there is one hotel in South Beach that has a mosaic of this painting on their ceiling. It was hidden for many years until last owner uncovered it during renovations. Love her clean, elegant Art Deco STyle!

Maybe Gaga does draw inspiration from her.
